Frequently Asked Questions

What is Myplan.ie?

Myplan.ie is a web map portal providing spatial information relevant to the statutory planning system in Ireland. It is an initiative of the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage in conjunction with Irish Local Authorities. The data is available through web map viewers, web map services and open data.

From where does the data originate?

The two primary datasets available on Myplan.ie are land use zonings from statutory development plans and planning application data sourced from the 31 individual local authorities across Ireland. Additional planning related data found in the zoning map viewer has been compiled from various sources including the Department of Education, the Office of Public Works, National Parks and Wildlife Service, National Monuments Service and the Central Statistics Office.

What is Generalised Zoning Type (GZT)?

Generalised Zoning Types were developed for the Myplan.ie project. They represents a consistent scheme for categorizing land use zonings across all local authorities, and complements (rather than replaces) the existing statutory zonings used for each individual plan.

How can I view the data?

The primary datasets, namely zoning and planning applications, can be viewed in the dedicated map viewers. Other data related to the planning process can be viewed in the zoning map viewer by toggling the data listed in the layer list. Additionally there are map viewers dedicated to stand-alone datasets and thematic maps available in the maps section.

What else can I do with the data?

The web maps allow users to view or overlay data by toggling layers and adjusting transparency in the map viewer. Some basic tools have also been included in the zoning map viewer to allow users to search, draw and measure, swipe between different layers or bookmark locations. The National Planning Application Database map viewer includes a tool to allow users to filter planning applications by date.

Can I access or download the data for my own use?

Data for which the Department of Housing, Local Government and Heritage has responsibility is available via the Department’s open data portal and in the Myplan.ie REST Services Directory. See the Useful Links section.

How accurate and up-to-date is the data?

Zoning data is uploaded as and when it becomes available from Local Authorities and we do our best to carry out on-going quality checks and monitor the status of plans to keep Myplan.ie as accurate and reliable as possible. Planning application data is uploaded from local authorities to the National Planning Application Database on a weekly basis. Planning Appeals data from An Bord Pleanala, including in relation to Strategic Housing Development (SHD) applications, is not currently available.
